If you eat as much ice cream as we do, buy an ice cream maker. We recently did just that and it has been nothing short of amazing. I was a bit of a skeptic. Could homemade “really” be as good as Thrifty? But, I had some reward points to use up so figured, why not? Let’s cash ’em in for a maker. Shoot, it could be fun and I figured I could tailor it to be a little less fatty and lighter on the sugar.
Well, after a simple batch of vanilla (per the maker’s recipe), we decided to venture into our own territory and mix a batch of chocolatey goodness. Of course we made it a cheaper and less fatty version. That is the $10 Buck Dinner way, right?
The outcome was nothing short of awesome! If you like Double Churned or low fat ice creams that are light, but creamy and full of flavor, then try this recipe.
Oh, and just so you know, it’s SUPER easy too! No cooking necessary. And no eggs to deal with. Just good old fashioned milk, cream, sugar and a few other simple ingredients, but those are listing below!
Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream:1 cup heavy cream – $.75
3/4 cocoa powder, sifted – $.75
1 cup half and half – $.50
1/4 cup sugar – $.30
1/2 cup brown sugar – $.50
1 cup whole milk – fridge
pinch of salt
1 Tbsp Vanilla extract – pantryCOST: $2.85
In a medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa, sugars and salt. Add the whole milk and whisk or use a small hand blender. Beat until sugars and salt are disolved and cocoa is fully combined. Stir in cream, half and half and vanilla. Cover and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours. I put mine in the freezer for 20 mins and then in the fridge for 20 more minutes to speed the process. Seemed to work fine.
When mixture is cold and ready, turn the ice cream maker on and pour the liquid into the FROZEN freezer bowl. My bowl gets cleaned and put right back into the freezer for future use. It’s always frozen and ready for ice cream.
Let mixer continue for 15 to 20 mins. Ice cream should have a soft creamy texture. If you want a firmer texture, remove after the 20 mins and place in plastic or glass container with lid and freeze for 1 to 2 hours. But who can wait for that? Not us!
