Grocery shopping with my kiddos – How we save $$$

My first video blog! I know its a little on the fun side and there’s tons to improve on, but it does help show the importance of smart shopping and also explains a bit about how I can keep my costs so low.

Generally, I shop two stores during the month, Sprouts Farmers Market and Save A Lot. Sprouts for produce, meats and cheese and Save A Lot (or sometimes Smart N Final) for dairy, canned and boxed goods (household goods too). I alternate weeks, so I still only go shopping once a week at most. Not too bad, really. Probably no more than the average person shops.

Anyway, this is how 10buckdinners does it! Do you have any secrets you’d like to share? How do you save on groceries? Is there anything I can add to the website that would help you save more? Let me know!

  1. Loved the video! Our farmer’s market is about to re-open. I can’t wait! I’m learning about what types of produce are in season and what isn’t. I just found out Yukon Gold potatoes (my favorite) are in season now and that’s why they’re available. Don’t know if you can answer a question or not, but I bought asparagus at the store (Walmart) the other day and I cooked it the same way I always do (steamed) and it had a weird taste to it. Do you have any idea why? I’m going to try to take it back because I paid almost $3.00 for a bunch about the size of what you showed on your video. Wish they had it here for 88 cents a pound! We love asparagus. Well, normally šŸ™‚

Awesome job ladies! All of you were great! I love shopping at Sprouts and our local Farmer’s Market for fresh, organic food at a reasonable cost. I personally clip coupons from the Sunday paper and from online sites and then wait for those particular items to go on sale at one of the local grocery stores. For example Cherrios might go on sale for $1.88 but sometimes I have a $0.50 or $1.00 off coupon that I can apply making named brand ceral very cheap. I also keep a little journal and I write the cheapest price that I purchased an item for that way I won’t purchase it again until it hits that price and then I stock up. Coffee prices have gone crazy…..but I wait and wait (typically every 2-3 mths) until Maxwell House or Yuban (33/34 oz-the large ones) goes on sale for $5.99….it always does eventually and then I stock up. I have a deep freezer and a food saver so I do the same thing with meat. Not to long ago I got whole chickens for $.59lb. Great deal! Also, around the holidays I will buy an extra turkey, corned beef or ham in addition to the one we will enjoy for the holiday. They are super cheap during these times and that way we can enjoy them again at a later date. And the best way I have found that I save money is to watch my receipts. When I make out my grocery list I write down the price advertised next to the item…..I have found once in the store you can’t always find the “sale” item and have to get a clerk to help you but the biggest suprise is how often I have been over charged at the check out. In the past 2 months of shopping every store has charged me the wrong price for one or several items…. I figure by catching the stores errors I am averaging about $15 monthly in savings that I would have overpayed otherwise. Irrating yes, but something you must be diligent about checking to ensure you are paying the right price. That is what I do in a nutshell. Hope you find it helpful.
